Braniewo Municipality

A rural municipality in Braniewo County, on the Vistula Lagoon, at the mouth of the Pasłęka and partly of the Bauda. It surrounds the town of Braniewo, where the municipal office is located at ul. Moniuszki 5. It covers 306.93 km² and has about 5,300 residents. Both of the county’s road border crossings with the Kaliningrad Oblast lie within the municipality.

Border crossings

• Gronowo–Mamonowo — a road crossing on national road 54, closed since 15 March 2020. The Border Guard lists its status as “temporarily closed”.
• Grzechotki–Mamonowo II — a road crossing for passenger and freight traffic. The S22 expressway ends here.

The S22 follows the route of a former motorway built in 1937.

Nature and economy

The municipality has two nature reserves: Cielętnik and Ostoja bobrów (the Beaver Refuge) on the River Pasłęka. It also includes the Pasłęka River and Old Prussian Coast protected landscape areas.

The economy is dominated by farming, with some fishing. The municipal office points to agritourism as a direction for development.

In the Association from the start

Braniewo Municipality is one of the ten municipalities that set up the Association in July 2019. Jakub Bornus, the Head of the Municipality, joined its first audit committee at that time.
